Google Chrome drops H.264 for WebM — ok?

January 13th, 2011 · No Comments

I’m a fan of WebM because its open, but ever since Google open sourced it after buying On2, I haven’t seen any traction in the platforms that support it.  Flash doesn’t support it (and it doesn’t seem like it will in 10.2 either), and so far only Chrome, and beta versions of Firefox 4 and Opera support it.  This is probably a move by Google to try to force the matter, but there just isn’t any support for this new codec out there yet.  Hopefully this bold move by Google will build more awareness for WebM, but there’s also so much static around it as being a strategic move in its war with Apple.  Whatever the truth is, having an open standard for video on the web is going to be very liberating for publishers and content creators.  That’s my 2 cents.
